My response:

I apologize if I am wrong but this seems to be a blatant returned fake check scam, where you give me a check for a large amount of money, I cash it, take my cut and give the rest to a local contact. The check never clears as it is fake, the account is overdrawn, or from a stolen account and my bank charges me the full amount of the check plus fees.

If you are being honest, and I’m willing to put faith that you are, we can still do business as you propose but with one small change. You wire me the funds via western union. Either the full amount or just my portion, I don’t care.

I didn’t feel like reporting it. I haven’t actually been scammed and there isn’t much law enforcement can do even if I was scammed. The best thing I can do is post the incident here so others are informed to be aware.
